"There is no chance of returning to the authoritarian model of government," says Donald Emmerson, director of the Southeast Asia Forum at Stanford University. "But behind what is on the surface an exercise in accountability is the nagging concern that people's lives aren't going to improve. ... We can identify a pattern of formal democracy, behind which bad things happen -- corruption, brutality, impunity, lack of accountability, the squeezing of the press."
